WBCS Exam Pattern – Detailed Guide

WBCS (West Bengal Civil Service) Exam Pattern is designed to test candidates on various aspects of general knowledge, aptitude, and subject expertise required for different government services in West Bengal.

1. Preliminary Examination (Prelims)

The Prelims is an objective type test that acts as a screening round. It consists of two compulsory papers:

  • Paper 1: General Studies (200 Marks, 2 Hours)
    Covers: Current events, History, Geography, Polity, Economy, Science & Technology, and more.
  • Paper 2: English Composition (100 Marks, 2 Hours)
    Tests basic English language skills such as grammar, vocabulary, and comprehension.

Note: There is negative marking for wrong answers.

2. Main Examination (Mains)

Candidates who qualify Prelims are eligible for Mains. This stage is descriptive and more detailed.

It includes:

  • Paper 1: Bengali/Hindi/Urdu/Nepali/Santhali (Compulsory Language)
  • Paper 2: English
  • Paper 3: Essay
  • Paper 4: General Studies 1 (Indian History, Culture, Geography)
  • Paper 5: General Studies 2 (Indian Polity, Economy, Governance)
  • Paper 6: Optional Subject Paper 1
  • Paper 7: Optional Subject Paper 2

The optional subjects vary based on your choice (e.g., Geography, History, Political Science, etc.).

3. Personality Test (Interview)

Candidates who clear the Mains are called for the final personality test. This evaluates the candidate’s mental alertness, social traits, and overall suitability for a government role.

  • After clearing Prelims, candidates must prepare for the descriptive and analytical nature of the Mains.
